"One day Vincent van Gogh took a break from painting a still life of sunflowers and left the arrangement sitting on a table. While he was gone, his cat hopped up on the forbidden table and started chewing on the flowers. The next portrait of the cat showed it missing one of its ears."*
This is a portrait of Odin's great-great-great-granduncle. After the ear incident, Sunflower left Van Gogh's studio and set up shop in Amsterdam. He became quite prosperous and frequently sent money to help support his brother's family in Finland, but it was not enough. After the great herring famine of 1923, Odin's great-great-great-grandfather stowed away on a ship bound for America.
*I purchased this print from The Cat Gallery, which features an entire collection of cat art parodies. In case you're interested, the print was of good quality, the price was right, and the service was excellent.
